Downtown Silver Spring continues to experience a Renaissance of new development. $450 million in public money has been invested in the redevelopment, as well as $1.5 billion in private investment by developers. Since its inception in 1993, the Chamber has worked tirelessly to bring successful redevelopment to Silver Spring’s downtown. Efforts have included testimony before the Montgomery County Council, the Montgomery County Park & Planning Commission, and the Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission in support of development projects planned for downtown Silver Spring. The heart of downtown Silver Spring includes community- and regionally-oriented shopping, the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center and a 5,000 seat, first-run movie complex, restaurants, offices, hotels, and parking facilities. Among the companies calling Silver Spring home are Discovery Communications and United Therapeutics. Construction is underway on the new Silver Spring Civic Building and Veterans Plaz that includes an ice skating rink and will serve as a new community gathering place. The 42,000 square foot civic building will face the retail-entertainment center across a large open plaza. Also, a new downtown public library is in the works. Culture and the Arts are emphasized in Silver Spring. Downtown offers a variety of community activities including the Silver Docs International Film Festival, the Silver Spring Swings Outdoor Summer Concert Series, the Magical Montgomery Cultural Fair and the Montgomery Annual Holiday Parade. And, the Round House Theater continues to bring in crowds for its many performances. < Back |
