Downtown Silver Spring continues to experience a Renaissance of new development. $450 million in public money has been invested in the redevelopment, as well as $1.5 billion in private investment by developers. Since its inception in 1993, the Chamber has worked tirelessly to bring successful redevelopment to Silver Spring’s downtown. Efforts have included testimony before the Montgomery County Council, the Montgomery County Park & Planning Commission, and the Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission in support of development projects planned for downtown Silver Spring. The heart of downtown Silver Spring includes community- and regionally-oriented shopping, the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center and a 5,000 seat, first-run movie complex, restaurants, offices, hotels, and parking facilities. Among the companies calling Silver Spring home are Discovery Communications and United Therapeutics. Plans are in place for the Silver Spring Civic Building and Veterans Plaza and ice skating rink to create a new community gathering place. The 42,000 square foot civic building will face the retail-entertainment center across a large open plaza. Downtown Silver Spring is evolving as the Silver Spring Metro station will be expanded to include MARC commuter rail, bus stations, and bicycle trails in the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center. Residential units, retail shops and a hotel will be constructed above the transit center. Growth is continuing as Montgomery College’s campus in adjacent Takoma Park is being expanded into South Silver Spring. Construction is underway for the college’s new Cultural Arts Center which will feature a variety of cross-cultural performances and events for all ages. It will include a 500-seat dance and music theatre with a state-of-the-art stage and acoustics, and a 100-seat theatre that will be used as a classroom and for performances. In addition, South Silver Spring is transforming into an appealing neighborhood with high tech businesses, arts oriented enterprises, new restaurants and over 1,000 new housing units. Also, a new downtown public library is in the works. Culture and the Arts are emphasized in Silver Spring. Downtown offers a variety of community activities including the Silver Docs International Film Festival, the Silver Spring Swings Outdoor Summer Concert Series, the Magical Montgomery Cultural Fair and the Montgomery Annual Holiday Parade. And, the Round House Theater continues to bring in crowds for its many performances. < Back |
