GSSCC Members Learn Practical Crime Prevention
GSSCC members who participated in the Chamber’s Crime Prevention Discussions this week learned some simple but practical steps they can take to prevent shoplifting, robbery and burglary in their businesses. Officer Joy Patil, Montgomery County Police Third District, led the discussion that covered handling of cash, safe location, purchasing procedures, staff training, inventory location and control, and surveillance. She also described how to look out for common credit card scams. Officer Patil directed members seeking regular updates about crimes in the area to the Department’s Web site here.

Save on Energy Costs – Join GSSCC’s Purchasing Co-op
GSSCC offers members an opportunity to save money, and stabilize energy costs over the long term. GSSCC’s Energy Co-op, created in conjunction with CQI Associates, an energy management and procurement company, has already saved participating members about 11 percent of what they would have paid in today’s market. First and foremost, this program is the only one in the state of Maryland that not only pools the energy needs of many companies, but also makes all of the state’s energy providers compete against each other to assure the best price. By combining the energy needs of participating companies, this co-op takes advantage of volume discounts not available to individual companies. That means there is a benefit for members of all sizes. By seeking competitive bids for a long-term contract, this co-op guarantees the best price possible in the market.

County Council T&E Committee to Address Silver Spring Parking
Following a recent meeting with GSSCC’s Government Affairs Committee, Montgomery County Councilwoman Nancy Floreen requested a report on parking in Silver Spring for the Transportation & Environment Committee she chairs. Among the issues discussed was the lack of sufficient parking where it is most needed, specifically in South Silver Spring, the challenges in providing new parking given the current debt to the parking lot district, and the methods used by the Department of Public Works & Transportation to calculate whether or not there is sufficient parking available. The committee will be seeking more input on these concerns and the Chamber will continue to follow this issue and advocate for increased attention to the problem.
