JUNE 2007Planning Board Approves Civic Center Plans Including Pavilion & Ice Rink Last Thursday evening, the Montgomery County Planning Board approved the plans for the new Silver Spring Civic Center & Veterans Plaza as submitted and including the pavilion and ice rink. The Chamber testified in favor of the project which has been designed to become vibrant and exciting public attraction to downtown Silver Spring. The majority of individuals and organizations that testified supported the Chamber’s view of the project. If all goes as planned, construction should begin this fall. Chamber to Testify on Proposed Annual Growth Policy Recommendations The Chamber will be on hand this Tuesday evening, June 26, to voice its concerns about recommendations made by the Montgomery County Planning Board to the County Council regarding changes in the county’s annual growth policy. The Chamber is concerned that the recommendations place too much emphasis on limiting growth (at a time when growth in the county has slowed to less than 2 percent) and too little on determining and financing infrastructure needs. While we agree that impact taxes and recordation fees are pieces of the puzzle, we believe the dramatic increases proposed are unreasonable and should not be the sole focus of efforts to fund infrastructure. A copy of the Chamber’s testimony can be found on the website after the hearing. GSSCC Updating Member Database The Chamber is updating its member database in preparation for publication of this year’s Business Directory and Buyers’ Guide.
